The affordability calculator was a flagship feature that I worked on when I first started at Driveway in 2020. The goal of the tool was to help customers better understand if they could afford a specific vehicle by providing the ability to see how various decisions would affect their overall cost and/or monthly payments.

The Problem it solved for customers
Driveway is owned by Lithia Motors. Lithia Motors also operates GreenCars.com, a consumer research and informational resource on all things Electric and hybrid vehicles. One of the GreenCars flagship experiences was a tool named the "Comparison Grid". Imagine an excel spreadsheet with information and ratings on every EV, hybrid, and plugin-hybrid available for sale in the united states.
The Problem it solved for customers
There are costs associated with buying and financing a car that are not reflected in the base price listing. By giving customers a tool where they could see what additional costs would be included in their purchase, including things like localized taxes and fees, shipping costs, optional protection plans, as well as possible savings such as trade-in credit and incentives, customers gained a better understanding of the true cost of the purchase and monthly payments.
The problem it solved for the business
By helping customers better understand the total cost of their purchase and estimated monthly payments we increased the percentage of cart starts to completion by decreased the number of cart starts where a customer was denied financing or determined that they could not afford the vehicle they selected. The success of the feature continues to prove valuable to the business as of today, in 2023.
Expanding upon an existing feature
When the affordability calculator was first launched Driveway only offered used vehicles for sale. Eventually Driveway was able to sell New Cars and we needed to expand the finance calculator to help customers estimate lease agreements as well.
